At Mobility by Vectio, we visited one of the most important national railway projects, the Pajares Variant, to chat with Alberto Garcia Alvarez, Doctor of Railway Engineering and a leading authority on rail transport. We began by discussing the situation of the Spanish high-speed network and the challenge of increasing its capacity without compromising service quality. Another relevant topic is the situation of freight transport, which is still unable to take advantage of improvements in many infrastructures due to management problems, an increase in construction work and the country’s own terrain. Finally, we addressed the situation of regions such as Asturias, with different track gauges, an extensive network of lines and a constant loss of passengers on the former FEVE commuter rail network.
