Vectio performs the traffic study for the new plant of La Robla Green

Vectio has recently carried out traffic and mobility studies, present and future, for the La Robla Green energy project that will be operational in 2026 according to the estimates of its promoters. This complex is located in La Robla, León, an important economic center in the north of the province, with good communications and a long industrial tradition. La Robla Green is an ambitious project that will revitalize this town in León after the closure of its emblematic thermal power plant as part of the energy transition process. The project, aligned with the new approaches to sustainable energy generation, will use biomass to generate electricity and e-methanol, a green fuel. The La Robla Green facilities will include Roblum, a biomass plant with CO2 capture and storage that will require an investment of 175 million euros, and La Robla Nueva Energía, a pioneering green e-methanol production facility, increasingly in demand in the maritime transport sector and the chemical industry.

The latter project, which will become the largest e-methanol plant in Europe, will require an investment of nearly 264 million euro. The Crispin industrial estate, in the municipality of La Robla, in the province of Leon, will house this large facility which will create around 450 jobs during the construction phase and 190 during the operation phase. On the other hand, the project promoters assure that the production will reach 400 GWh per year, 34 GWh of heat network and 100,000 tons of green e-metabnol. In addition, La Robla Green will contribute approximately 16 million euros per year in income for the agricultural and logistics sector. The e-methanol plant will need green hydrogen, which the promoters expect to obtain either through a supply agreement from the future renewable hydrogen plant that Naturgy and Enagas are going to build in La Robla or, if this is not possible due to the timeframe, with a new green hydrogen factory that would represent a new investment.

For the traffic study, videos with onboard cameras, artificial vision cameras located at the main intersections and data from the nearest gauging stations were used. The data analyzed showed a very insignificant impact on both current and estimated traffic in 20 years due to the impact of the La Robla Green plant, and the location chosen for the project was considered very favorable.

In addition, it has recently been announced that the project has been selected by the European Commission as one of the 85 innovative projects at European level that will receive aid from the European Union’s Innovation Fund. This Community fund is financed by the taxes that the European Union collects from polluters, who have to pay for their greenhouse gas emissions through the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS).
