Vectio was commissioned by the public company Sociedad de Servicios del Principado de Asturias (SERPA) to draft this assessment. This assessment was to diagnose the road capacity and level of service of the proposal for the project of the new layout of the AS-17 Motorway, Avilés-Riaño, in the section between Bobes and San Miguel de la Barreda.
The objective was to provide Sociedad de Servicios del Principado de Asturias with an assessment that would provide baseline data on the traffic flow in the area, estimate the mobility that the proposed development would generate in the vicinity of Bobes (Siero) using the four-step transport method and diagnose whether it has ample capacity to cater for the road capacity, analysing the main road, the existing access roads and proposing the necessary modifications so that the industrial area is accessed optimally.
The works were carried out in two separate parts, at distinct times:
- The first part consisted in the capture of traffic data and the construction of a digital traffic model using analysis techniques.
- In the second part, based on the model built in the first part, we conducted an in-depth assessment of the level of exploitation of the three roundabout junctions that were included in the road-widening project.
The works carried out to conduct this assessment were as follows:
- Collection of existing data on traffic demand of the surrounding roads and ATC surveys;
- Installation of traffic counts with pneumatic technology, radar technology and artificial vision cameras;
- Assessment of allocation of future traffic rates;
- Analysis of the level of service of the surrounding roads;
- Automated count with artificial vision software from footage taken on site of vehicles of the different connections and junctions;
- Construction and calibration of a digital traffic model of the area.
