This project arose in response to the need to analyse the problems and the impact of traffic produced by the changes that were taking place in Panama City. These works projected in the city centre can be classified in three large groups:
- Road infrastructure works planned inside the Road Reordering Plan of Panama and the Metropolitan Area
- Construction works for Line One of the Panama Metro
- Works for the location of MetroBus stops
These works would provide Panama City with such fundamental transport for the mobility in a modern city, such as the Metro and MetroBus, and an improved road network that would alleviate the usual congestion problems in the large intersections and junctions of the urban network. During the works, traffic would be significantly affected since it would be necessary to totally or partially cut off several large junctions.
The aim of this project was to provide diversions and alternative routes that ensure the mobility of people and goods. However, it was also necessary to take into account the impact of these alterations on the entire urban network, which is why the delays and stops that could occur throughout the road network were studied globally in order to optimise and minimise queues, travel times and fuel consumption and polluting emissions.
To achieve this, the corresponding traffic analysis studies were conducted on the Digital Traffic Model of the City of Panama, which was built for that purpose. The work carried out for the construction of this Model consisted of a laborious collection of data through a survey campaign, filming the junctions and intersections and installing ATC survey.
