This traffic and mobility study is a technical analysis examining the current and future capabilities of the area under study, diagnosing the eventual improvement, and proposing improvement actions.
The core of this study has been gathering and obtaining current data on mobility in the area (automatic traffic counts [ATC] surveys, swept path matrices, transport availability and characteristics of transport infrastructure), analysing and diagnosing current mobility and evaluating the measures proposed (new traffic lights system and geometric expansion of certain infrastructure) in order to achieve the best flow of traffic possible in the urban area of the City of Gaborone.
The following tasks were completed to prepare this assessment:
- Gathering existing data of the current traffic on the roads under study (ITS).
- Gathering site planimetry with the design layout, proposal of connections and other general data.
- Recording with cameras during AM and PM peak hours in the following intersections1:
- Automatic traffic counting with artificial vision software from field recordings of vehicles made in order to understand traffic flow distribution in the key intersections of the City.
- Videos of routes with cameras set on board vehicles.
- Traffic microsimulation based on an AIMSUN model.
- Estimation of level of service with HCM (Highway Capacity Manual) software.
