Study of parking lot occupancy by heavy vehicles in the Industrial Park of Silvota

Residential, Housing & Mix-used developments

The Silvota Industrial Estate is currently positioned as a business reference point in Asturias, partly due to its strategic location in the region, which offers good vehicular accessibility from the AS-66, AS-II or AS-17 highways.

The industrial park, which occupies a space of about 1,400,000 square meters, is currently made up of more than 200 companies with approximately 4,000 workers (direct and indirect workers). The most developed sectors in the industrial park are metal, construction, services, transport, food and distribution.

Inside, it has a multitude of general services and an adequate network of infrastructures, which physically connect the extensive business network and the activities developed in this area. The roads inside the industrial park (which have a wide cross-section) and the configuration of their intersections make it easier for large vehicles or vehicles with special loads to maneuver safely.

The Silvota Industrial Park Business Association (Asemposil) is in charge of maintaining the infrastructure of the industrial park, managing general services and establishing a dynamic business network, including tasks such as the exchange of business information, institutional representation and private security, among others.

Due to the industrial nature of the area under study and the extensive activity of this type that takes place in Silvota, there is currently a significant amount of heavy vehicle traffic in the industrial park, and this high volume of heavy vehicles (of large dimensions) in the interior of the Silvota Industrial Park requires adequate traffic management for this type of vehicle, which must ensure that they can circulate, carry out maneuvers or park in safe conditions. Thanks to the good condition of the interior roads and intersections, which offer sufficient space, the circulation and maneuverability of these vehicles is fluid, without significant turbulence in the traffic, which is regulated with the pertinent signage.

However, with regard to the parking of heavy vehicles, it has been detected that these are responsible for occupying the vast majority of the parking available in the interior of the industrial park, which is scattered along the streets of the industrial park, mainly as parking spaces in line on both sides of the roadway. Many of these trucks, due to the needs of their activity, spend the night in the industrial park, which means that they are large vehicles that also park for long periods of time.

Vectio’s technical staff proposed, in coordination with the study management, a gauging campaign in different points of the study environment. The fieldwork campaign designed was focused on the main roads in the area, as well as in the vicinity of the endowment plot that is the object of this study. Both the field work carried out and the collection of existing data for the study have been:

  • Compilation of planimetry.
  • Installation of 4 artificial vision cameras.
  • Automatic traffic counts (videos processed by artificial vision software).
  • Installation of 2 pneumatic tube technology gauges.
  • Videos of the route filmed by means of a georeferenced camera on board a vehicle along all the main streets inside the industrial park. Thanks to the processing of these videos it was possible to determine the degree of occupation and the state of the parking inside the industrial park.
